General educational information. Rules, coaching practices and safety requirements vary by sport, age, venue and governing body.
Look before receiving
Many decisions improve when the athlete checks space, teammates and opponents before the ball arrives.
Reduce the choices for beginners
Small-sided games and simple rules make patterns easier to notice. Add options as understanding grows.
Use questions after the play
Ask what the athlete saw, what options existed and why a choice was made. This builds awareness better than only giving commands.
Review without blame
Video and notes should help identify patterns, not embarrass players. Focus on decisions that can be changed.
Accept uncertainty
Good decisions do not always produce good outcomes. Evaluate the information and choice, not only the result.
