General educational information. Rules, coaching practices and safety requirements vary by sport, age, venue and governing body.
Separate outcome and process goals
Winning and rankings depend partly on others. Process goals focus on preparation, technique, decisions and habits.
Choose a small number
Too many goals divide attention. One main goal and a few supporting actions are usually enough.
Make progress observable
Track sessions completed, successful decisions, technical cues or practice quality rather than vague motivation.
Review and adjust
A goal can be changed when the season, school schedule, health or interests change. Adjustment is not failure.
Protect enjoyment
Sport should not become a constant test of worth. Include goals related to learning, teamwork and enjoyment.
