Sports Equipment: Fit, Care and Replacement

Choose equipment for the activity, fit it correctly and inspect it regularly.

General educational information. Rules, coaching practices and safety requirements vary by sport, age, venue and governing body.

Fit comes before features

Protective equipment and footwear must match the person, activity and current rules. Brand prestige cannot compensate for poor fit.

Follow manufacturer instructions

Use adjustment systems, care methods and replacement guidance provided for the product. Do not modify protective gear in ways that weaken it.

Inspect before use

Look for cracks, loose fasteners, damaged straps, worn soles, sharp edges and other obvious problems.

Clean and dry equipment

Air out damp gear, clean it using approved methods and store it away from excessive heat or moisture.

Know when professional help is needed

Skate sharpening, bicycle repairs, helmet fitting, racquet stringing and other technical tasks may require a qualified shop or technician.
