General educational information. Rules, coaching practices and safety requirements vary by sport, age, venue and governing body.
Position before speed
The best footwork places the body where the skill can be performed. Fast feet without good positioning create rushed actions.
Learn sport-specific patterns
Shuffle, crossover, drop step, split step, pivot and recovery steps appear in different combinations across sports.
Stay quiet and controlled
Heavy, uncontrolled steps often make changes of direction slower. Aim for purposeful contacts and stable posture.
Connect feet to eyes and hands
Footwork should be practised with the ball, puck, racquet, opponent or target whenever possible.
Respect the surface
Shoes and technique must match courts, grass, turf, ice, mats or trails. Surface conditions can change quickly.
