Hydration Basics for Sport

Plan access to fluids and adjust for heat, duration and individual needs.

General educational information. Rules, coaching practices and safety requirements vary by sport, age, venue and governing body.

Begin normally hydrated

Regular drinking through the day is generally more practical than trying to catch up immediately before activity.

Use opportunities to drink

Bring a labelled bottle where allowed and use scheduled breaks. Access may need special planning for long events or travel.

Conditions change needs

Heat, humidity, clothing, intensity and duration affect fluid loss. There is no single amount that fits everyone.

Avoid extremes

Both too little and excessive fluid intake can be harmful. Follow qualified guidance for long or demanding events.

Know the venue

Check whether water is available and whether bottles, hydration packs or aid stations are permitted.
