Mobility & Flexibility for Sport

Build usable range of motion through controlled, regular practice.

General educational information. Rules, coaching practices and safety requirements vary by sport, age, venue and governing body.

Mobility is movement you can control

Useful mobility combines range with strength and coordination. Being able to force a position does not guarantee control in sport.

Train the positions your sport uses

Ankles, hips, shoulders and upper back are common areas, but the priority depends on the activity and the individual.

Avoid painful stretching

Gentle tension may be normal; sharp pain, numbness or joint pain is not. Do not force another person into a stretch.

Use small regular doses

A few minutes added to warm-ups, cooldowns or separate sessions can be easier to maintain than occasional long routines.

Get help for persistent limits

Restrictions linked to pain, previous injury or disability should be discussed with a qualified health or rehabilitation professional.
