General educational information. Rules, coaching practices and safety requirements vary by sport, age, venue and governing body.
Train movement patterns
Programs commonly include squat, hinge, push, pull, carry, brace, jump and landing patterns. The exact exercises should match the athlete’s experience and supervision.
Technique before load
Good control with an appropriate resistance matters more than lifting impressive numbers. Add difficulty gradually and never copy advanced routines without coaching.
Connect training to the sport
Strength work should support the demands of the activity: repeated efforts, stability, force production and control. More training is not automatically better.
Plan recovery
Hard sessions need space around them. School, work, sleep, competition and other training all contribute to total load.
Use qualified instruction
Young or inexperienced athletes should train with knowledgeable supervision and equipment that can be used safely.
