Warm-Up and Cool-Down Basics

Prepare gradually, finish calmly and follow sport-specific coaching guidance.

General educational information. Rules, coaching practices and safety requirements vary by sport, age, venue and governing body.

Why preparation matters

A warm-up helps players move from rest toward the speed and coordination demanded by the activity. It is preparation, not a test of toughness.

Build gradually

Start with easy whole-body movement, then add mobility and sport-specific patterns. Finish with a few controlled efforts that resemble the upcoming activity without exhausting the athlete.

Keep stretching appropriate

Dynamic movements are often used before activity, while gentle static stretching may fit better after training or in a separate mobility session. Individual needs differ, so follow qualified coaching or clinical advice.

Cool down without overcomplicating it

An easy walk, light movement, hydration and a short review can provide a calm transition. There is no need for extreme routines or painful stretching.

Know when to stop

Pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty or unusual symptoms are reasons to stop and seek help from a responsible adult, coach or qualified health professional.
